Summary: Norton Internet security

Comment: I don't rate Norton at all anymore, it's insidious, gets into every part of your machine and an absolute monster when trying to remove it from your system. Not recommended, does what its supposed to but not user friendly and a down right nuisance at times, steer clear, and try Kaspersky, so far it's a dream in comparison.

Summary: Norton 2008 Nightmare!

Comment: I installed Norton Internet Security 2008 on my DELL pc, which already had Norton 2004 installed. This latter program was due for a subscription renewal so I figured it would be cheaper to purchase and install the later version which must be an improvement mustn't it??? The installation appeared to go ok, but then it got stuck at the final "live update" stage. I left it running for about an hour, with the program apparently "updating" my pc, but it never completed and I guessed it must have "hung". I then tried to stop the installation, but to no avail. In the end, I was obliged to use "control-alt-delete" to halt the program. I then retried installation and the same thing happened. By now, my pc was running very slowly and took about 3 minutes to re-boot! I got VERY worried, wishing I had never bothered with the product. I then managed to uninstall Norton 2008. I then used System Restore to go back to where I started, hoping Norton 2004 would work ok again but of course it didn't! Error messages started appearing and the 2004 version would not run. I then tried to uninstall 2004 to get rid of Norton altogether from my system, but it would not uninstall and would not let me re-install over the top of the damaged program!!! Getting desperate, I used the windows "clean-up" program to uninstall all the bits of Norton from my pc and then cleaned up the registry with Registry Mechanic. Finally, I managed to re-install Norton 2004 which now appears to be 90% ok but some things no longer work - like email SPAM detection. I won't be touching any Norton products again. This episode has taught me a lesson and given me a great deal of unnecessary worry so I have returned the discs to Amazon for a full refund. Hope you have better luck with it than I did!

Summary: High performance, low on resources, unobtrusive

Comment: I own 2 PC's and a laptop all running on Windows XP. I previously used Norton Anti Virus 2007 but noticed the speed of the computers slowing. With the cost of the update renewals being expensive (around £20 each) and all the talk of Norton being resource hungry, I decided to try AVG Internet Security 7.5. Initially I was fairly pleased (only fairly because of all the pop-ups from AVG) but eventually AVG would not work on one PC and AVG support, after many time wasting attempts, were unable to fix the problem. The final straw was, less than half way through my 2 year AVG subscription, my 2 remaining computers started running very slowly. After checking my system resources (CTRL-ALT-DEL, Windows Task Manager -Processes - Mem Usage)I was astonished to find AVG as the largest memory user (click on mem usage header to get highest at the top). I decided to switch back to Norton after reading a review on Which? Norton have made huge improvements in speed. It still works unobtrusivelly in the background, plus all the user interfaces (menus) have a user friendly/professional feel to them. Now all 3 computers are running as if they were new again, whilst being protected at the same time. Highly recommended and worth the money.

Summary: Bad for for your hard drive. pocket and sanity

Comment: I made the mistake of trying to upgrade on line for this. The end result was needing to have my hard drive wiped and starting all over again. The software tells you it needs to uninstal the existing software before installing this. What it actually did was a fragmented uninstal that left bits of the prior version floating around running when it felt like it with no way to access and turn it off. Norton seemed helpful at first sending me a programme to clean up. This made the situation even worse. Oh and I had a virus come through with this rubbish. Norton then completely lost interest. I was now asking for my money back as this simply does not work. Norton now stopped replying to all forms of contact. Later they did try on sending renewal notifications for my older version that had been extracted only by wiping the hard disc. Maybe the disc might work but then they can not be trusted around updates as I have expensively found out. Norton really do not want to know, they have your money and well insert your own words.......

Summary: No ad blocking

Comment: I 'upgraded' to this from Norton Personal Firewall. Have now uninstalled Norton Internet Security as had trouble with pop-ups ever since installing it. The old Firewall does the job and no more ads! I understand Norton have discontinued the Ad blocking. Why??

Wouldn't recommend this priduct - waste of money.
