Summary: Hugely disappointing world view
Comment: You would have thought that with entire encylopaedia being fitted onto a couple of CDs these days, that a product such as this would contain a true wealth of detail both visual and textual. Unfortunately, despite the misleading list of "features" in the product info, 3D World Atlas is disappointingly simple and suffers from a very poor user interface that makes searches/browsing unwieldy. The maps are basic at best and the whole "3D" thing has an unfortunate 1980s video game appearance. For those expecting the the graphic detail of a hardcover world atlas on a disc, 3D falls some way short.

First comes the ordinary view of the earth's physical features from the heavens--yes, you really can pick out the Great Wall of China--and then an image of the earth by night, showing all the lights around the world: it's a sparkly and revealing picture of the spread of economic development across the planet. Add to this brilliant photography of deserts, mountains and jungles in the bio-climate zones and the package transcends the limitations of traditional atlases. --Toby Green
