Summary: Ok for beginner or intermediate but don't rely solely on it
Comment: This dictionary is fine for low-level learners but I wouldn't use it to try and look up more complicated words. Often it just doesn't have them and once we looked up the word 'earplug' and it turned out that what it came out with was something very different and caused a russian to blush and snigger at us. Suffice to say it could have led to a very embarrassing situation in a chemists.

Summary: Excellent language learning games
Comment: This computer dictionary has proved extremely useful to me in my efforts to improve my Russian without resorting to a language course. The dictionary itself is pretty comprehensive, has fast techniques to get you from one side of the dictionary to the other, and is clearly laid out. There are two language-learning games included which help hone your active language skills. The shooting gallery is a timed word-translation game. You have to translate ten words in a limited time in exchange for points. Words you get wrong are repeated until you get them right and then once more to ensure that you get positive reinforcement. The source of the words can be either a subset of the dictionary based on learning level (beginner, intermediate, advanced) or on a special subset that you can choose, for example all of the verbs ending in kazat', or the words you didn't understand from your latest reading exercise. The crossword game is a slower vocabulary-learning tool that derives its words either from part or all of the dictionary. Both are great tools for active learning. If only the product had a future! I made several suggestions to the publisher, Intense Language Office, for improvements and according to them, Collins has withdrawn the license to use its database and so there will be no further improvements of what I think is a terrific product. Such a shame.

Summary: Useful for pronunciation
Comment: Easy to use.
Almost every entry has a recording which pronouces the word. It uses a recording of real person which is much better than a computer generated voice. Spoken entries are only for infinitives of verbs, nominative case of nouns etc. Sufficient detail is provided on grammar exceptions (such as verb conjugation).
Plenty of examples and clear explanations for most entries.
The dictionary itself is excellent.
Unfortunately I find that the games and learning tools are poor. But this is still an excellent product and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone studying Russian.
Note: Depending on which version you buy, you may need to download the update from the internet to get proper unicode cut and paste.
