Summary: Waste of money
Comment: This trip planner is very limited in what it offers. It does not calculated routes for small places or indeed named urban roads; only the cities that it lists. We found several mistakes, for example wrong directions in one-way roads, and some major roads completly missing (probably because the package was released in 1999). Frankly if you need to use something like this you're far better off using "Yahoo Map & Driving" on the internet for free; and for detailed maps the best the USA offers are the DeLorme state atlases thru Amazon.

Summary: National Geographic Trip Planner
Comment: We used the planner in summer 2ooo to plan our first U.S. holiday. We had a rough idea of the area that we wanted to see - the north -west coast and with great excitement we sat round our pc and ran the National Geographic Trip Planner. The information and the graphics were just unbelievable! we were able to plan the entire trip - 3 weeks seeing 5 states and covering 3000 miles(starting and finishing in Washington state),all from our from our own lounge in Luton England. The programme was easy to follow and enabled us to plan our route by motor home travelling from one campsite to another allowing enough time to see some of splendors of the U.S.A.. We just grew in confidence I guess it had something to do with the fact that we just knew that the information National Geographic provided was accurate and reliable. We took the programme with us on the trip using our laptop and were able to map our progress and plan any detours that took our fancy. The information from the planner was so accurate that we felt we could'nt have done any better even if we had been seasonned travellers in the U.S.A.. I took one wrong turning,a block or so out of our way, after all it was our last day and we'd had an early start. We can't thank National Geogaphic enough for making our holiday such a memorable experience. Incidently we are planning a trip to Austalia this year - any chance of Natioanal Geogaphic doing a planner for Australia?. Many many thanks, John and Betty Sentinella , Revd Clive Raybould and Jenny Holiday.

National Geographic made its name in multimedia by digitising the whole of its printed magazine. Since then the company has produced several CD ROMs, and this one, Trip Planner Deluxeprovides what you need to plan the perfect journey through the USA and Canada. The software has a standard route-planner component. If you give it a start and end point, and any stopping off points in between, it will work out a driver's route. Tell it how fast you tend to drive on different kinds of road, whether you prefer scenic routes, and even when to nudge you to take a rest and it will take this into account when planning. The software incorporates a reference database covering everything from how to find the perfect camera bag to general weather statistics for different times of year throughout the US and Canada. There is a notebook for your own jottings, and a huge database called the Guidebook which lists places to eat and stay, attractions and even guided walks around towns and country. If you find a place you want to visit, a quick click locates it on a map at the appropriate scale. If somewhere has been recommended by friends who have already tried it, slot it into the locator and the software will find it for you. Trip Planner Deluxeis brimming with information, yet it remains easy to use. It could be very useful for anyone planning a North American holiday. --Sandra Vogel
