Summary: Enthralling, Enthralling, Enthralling
Comment: This film opens up modern-day China to a Western audience with the charm and subtlety rarely found in Hollywood filmmaking. At times, the mixture of real-world footage and acting make for what feels like a fly-on-the-wall documentary. It's hard to believe that this isn't really happening. But, of course, it is, in a way. If you think that don't understand China and the Chinese, watch this film. This is a film about people, and whilst very Chinese in its focus on the retention of 'face' and dignity, one is struck by just how much we all share on this tiny planet.
The moment where the naive countryfolk buy city clothes is one of the finest understated pieces of cringemaking beauty I have ever encountered on film. You might ask what cringemaking beauty is. I won't say any more...
The acting is first-class, the cinematography earthy, the musical leitmotif forceful, the script second-to-none, and the direction so light that it is invisible.
Watch this, and watch 'To Live' and you might see a world you didn't know existed, but at the same time find yourself looking right in the mirror.

Summary: Be careful or you may get what you wish for.
Comment: This is a classic tale of "be careful or you may get what you wish for". It is the most contemporary of Zhang Yimou's films and, as the central character, Qiu Ju takes her grievance higher and higher through the echelons of Chinese bureaucracy, we see the contrast between the languid, medieval, rural areas and the modern cities with all their hustle and bustle.
Qiu Ju is a peasant woman, played by the ubiquitous Gong Li. What she wants is an apology from the village chief for beating up her husband. To fully understand the doggedness with which she pursues this objective you have to understand the high value placed upon "face" in Chinese society. If not, you might find yourself asking, half-way through the film, "Why is this woman so stubborn? Why doesn't she just give up?" But she doesn't give up and in the end she gets more than she ever bargained for.
I loved the insights into life in rural China that this film gave me and I learned something about human nature that I never really knew before.
