Summary: Predictable but reassuring
Comment: I'm about to enter year 13 and thus apply to university, and if you're anything like me you will have already started to panic over the UCAS system!
This book would be particularly suitable for students who do not have regular access to a reliable UCAS or careers advisor in their school (perhaps because they attend a large comprehensive, as opposed to the small private schools that tend to be so successful at getting their pupils into university...), or to those who are applying to UCAS as an individual or mature applicant. This is because most of the information contained in the book, indeed if not all, is already available through the UCAS website (www.ucas.com), or could be confirmed by asking an experienced teacher. All the authors have done is collect all of this varied data and present it in a clear and simple format. They manage to do this very well, but don't expect to learn anything new or exclusive with this book; it merely confirms what any good applicant should know.
The first section is dedicated to giving general advice over whether higher education is suitable for you or not, selecting a course and choosing where to study. There is also some basic information covering student finace - much more detailed and specific information is available from universities themselves or www.aimhigher.ac.uk Most schools and colleges would supply much more information than is covered in this book.
The second part deals with the rules and procedure of UCAS, such as deadlines, etc. There is also a chapter on 'Non Standard Applications': i.e. those for highly competitive courses such as medicine; the different system that applies to art & design applicants; Oxbridge hopefuls; and how to defer entry if you are planning to take a gap year. As promising as this section sounds, be warned it is very basic and not nearly enough if you are serious about applying for courses such as these. For example, the Oxbridge section consists of three sentances advising that a further application needs to be sent to the university of your choice... certainly no insider tips to be found here! Personally, I found this section very disappointing.
Probably the best and most useful section is the last - this deals with how to complete each page of the online UCAS form (known as 'Apply'). In my opinion, UCAS' own free booklet which aims to help complete the online form is not very good - this book certainly makes the process easier and less scary than it might otherwise appear.
It might sound excessive to have a book telling you how to fill in details such as your name and address, but when you are applying to university you need to make sure you know exactly what you are doing; mistakes take time to correct, which could make the difference between an offer or rejection. Did you know, for example, that the Date of Birth section is the most common error made by applicants?
Finally, the last few pages are dedicated to completing the crucial personal statement, complete with good and bad examples and a checklist. Although not fantastic, this should provide a constant reminder of what is required, and will probably supplement what you are advised by others.
The book would also be useful for careers advisors or teachers to have a copy - perhaps in the school careers library - as a reference for anyone who needs it.
If it is a choice between spending money on this book or one directly related to the subject you want to study at university, go for the latter. This book will not provide anything more than a reassurance and clear step-by-step guide, but you may find this useful when you're still agonising over your personal statement at 2am!
