Summary: VAK learning within the Numeracy Strategy
Comment: My class of Year One children love this book. We introduce the songs at regular intervals as suits the topic being taught. Currently 'Double Double Dumpling' and 'Tom Thumb' are the class favourites. The children sing the songs at playtimes, during carpet sessions, in literacy sessions as well as in the mental/oral numeracy sessions. I have also found that the songs work well during the plenary.
I am not musical! but the songs are based around well known nursery rhymes and are quick and easy to remember. Used with simple visual aids (suggestions are given) the songs enhance the numeracy time and offer opportunities for different types of learners as well as different styles of learning.
I have strongly recommended it to my teaching colleagues and it has been well received.
Customer Rating:
Summary: Wonderfully familiar songs with alternative words.
Comment: The children love this book as it contains many familiar songs but with alternative words that make the children laugh. Well worth using to brighten up any boring maths lesson. I can not live without it!

Tom Thumb's Musical Maths by Helen MacGregor is an excellent book of songs and chants that help to develop children's maths skills. It is a book meant for teachers, but could be used by any parent at home to consolidate the skills that children are learning at school. The book is divided into four sections with songs covering the topics of counting, number and algebra, shape, space and measures and finally mental arithmetic. All the songs are set to familiar tunes, for example, Three blind mice, and for more musically talented people the song melodies are at the back of the book. Each page is clearly laid out with the song title, the tune, and the words to the song. In the bottom right-hand corner of each page is a summary of the maths focus for that song and in the bottom left-hand corner of the page are the first notes of each melody. Three symbols are also used throughout the book to indicate a description of how to use the song, other mathematical things that could be done and musical suggestions. Tom Thumb's Musical Maths is a book well worth buying to help any Key Stage 1 child with their maths and is therefore suitable for children aged 5-7 years old. --Amanda York
