Summary: Useful and no-nonsense
Comment: I found this book useful, entertaining and straightforward. It's written in a no-nonsense style and gives practical, hands-on advice, based on personal experience. Unlike some other books on the same subject, it doesn't have an unduly pious attitude towards students and acknowledges that the audience may inevitably fall asleep or start chatting but it proposes some simple solutions to dealing with these inevitabilities. The 'initial burst' approach is promising, and I found a number of very helpful tips. I'm a seasoned university lecturer myself and appreciate anything that offers some fresh impetus on a practice that can become stale, if not renewed from time to time. I also liked the author's acknowledgement of the 'fun' element of lecturing!

Summary: unique and insightful
Comment: In contrast to the previous review, I found this book quite interesting from two perspectives. First of all, the personal element in the book, which I agree is a large element, was interesting. Often with these types of books the authors say "try this, try that" without you knowing why and where their ideas come from and what experiences have led them to this conclusion. So, I did like this element. As for the contents, there are several good and unique ideas here. Generally, the perspectives of this author on lecturing are different than what I have heard or read about in many instances. I also liked the concise nature of the book such that you do not have to read 100 pages to get a single idea (I have found this to be a flaw with many lecturing/speaking books in general).

Summary: a few good bits but a lot of nonsense
Comment: First you need to get over the personal aspect of this book. The author acknowledges it is a "personal book" but I expected something else from Cambridge University Press. This is loaded with pictures showing the author lecturing, the text is very self-centered (including a personal history of the guy with even childhood pic!!!), and he rubs his (ex)bosses in the right way too. I found that highly annoying.
As per the content, which might hold in 30 pages if you remove the constant repetition and loads of useless pictures, it is more or less interesting, giving a few good tips that I may apply - for instance I will try this "start fast, slow down later" technique he proposes.
But this is a very slim result for a book with such a pompous title. Disappointing in the end: if I were you I would get the book by Malouf on this subject instead - it has a lot "look at me I did this and that" too but at least it has more meat.
