Summary: Comprehensive, but initially daunting
Comment: First of all, let's get this out of the way: this is without a doubt an excellent course in modern Japanese. However, it is not aimed at the casual student, nor - for that matter - is it aimed at the home-learner. By the authors own admission in the preface, this is intended as a Japanese course, being taught by a native Japanese speaker.
That being said, it is nevertheless still approachable by the home learner - I've been studying with this book on my own for a couple of months now, and have found it to be a difficult, but excellent and thorough. To use this book successfully at home, you will need to buy or borrow supplementary material; in particular a Japanese character dictionary is useful, as is an introduction to Japanese script (the Teach yourself Japanese Script is worth looking in to for this). Japanese script is deliberately used from the very start, so spending time familiarizing yourself with kana (hiragana and katakana) is absolutely essential before beginning the course. Also, as has been noted by other reviewers, it is absolutely essential that you buy both Volumes of this course - the second volume contains the word lists introduced in each lesson, and exercises to help you both with the grammar, and with familiarizing yourself with the new kanji and words.
In short: if you're prepared to put in the effort, this is a highly rewarding course, that will have you reading proper Japanese text before you know it, which is - in itself - a rewarding and satisfying feeling.

Summary: Best Japanese Course Available
Comment: The course consists of two books: An Introduction to Modern Japanese - Book 1: Grammar Lessons An Introduction to Modern Japanese - Book 2: Exercises and Word Lists
It is absolutely essential that you buy both books, otherwise you will not have all of the materials required to learn properly.
I think on first instance it may seem pretty expensive, but I can assure you it is worth every penny. I have completed the first ten lessons and my reading and writing ability are excellent already.
The greatest thing about it is that it's a complete course, with no holes in it. Once you complete it you'll be able to read and write pretty much fluently. The course teaches you about 3000 words, upwards of about 1000 kanji and all grammar usage. I would suggest you get a kanji dictionary to go along with it however.
The lessons are very well layed out and easy to understand, building you up bit by bit through 52 different lessons. It has a quality that only Cambridge could offer, infact there is no better Japanese course available in book format.
Learning Japanese is actually quite easy when it is taught the right way.

Summary: Comprehensive guide to the Japanese language
Comment: This book is only for the serious student, but will teach you enough to function well in Japanese. It uses kanji from lesson one, thus minimalising the 'fear factor' that can build up when kanji is introduced late in a Japanese course. The book covers all the main grammar points of Japanese, giving detailed, clear and scholarly explanations of grammar. The accompaning exercise book is useful (even if some of the exercises are rather repetitive, but at least students can practice their writing skills). I would only recommend this book to students who have a Japanese teacher/native to whom they can ask questions and give their completed exercises for marking. Cambridge students of Japanese complete this book and the exercise book in two terms, going on to read real literature (like Rashomon) in their third term, if that gives an indication of the level to which this book takes you. Having both used it as a student and taught from it as a teacher, I can say it is great for both purposes Japanese is a language which requires dedication; if you have it, I heartily recommend this book!
