Summary: An essential resource for any IGCSE Maths candidate
Comment: This revision guide has everything you need to get the grade you know you are capable of receiving. It sets out the topics in the syllabus clearly, and distinguishes between the core and extended syllabuses. There are a few practice papers included, and some descriptions of the grade expectations, although they could be more specific with the separate grades. Some more practice papers would be appreciated as well. However, this is a simple, clearly laid out book that has all the information you need to do IGCSE Maths.

Summary: IGCSE Mathematics Revision Guide, examiner comments
Comment: I am not in a position to use Martin Law's book in a classroom situation, but as an examiner and trainer for IGCSE mathematics, I am very interested in it as a resource. The book links well with IGCSE Mathematics by Karen Morrison in that the chapters follow precisely the topic numbers in the syllabus. Each chapter begins with a statement of the syllabus followed by brief revision notes, and the few small changes of syllabus for 2006 are included. The numerous worked examples follow and I particularly liked the use of blue as opposed to black print to distinguish between notes/hints and the actual solution to the question. The 2-colour method is again used to clearly indicate the topics which only occur in the Supplement (Extended level) section of the syllabus. This should be particularly useful for those candidates taking the examination at core level who would not need to study chapters with blue headings. Within the chapters there are no exercises for the students to do and this is perhaps a small limitation of the book. The question section is at the end and is in the form of practice exams. The indication of marks awarded in each question is valuable since a teacher who has looked at published mark schemes would be able to communicate to students where part marks are likely to be awarded. No specific distinction is made between paper 1 and paper 3 type core questions ( or between paper 2 and 4 extended) but this is not a fault since several topics vary as to which paper they occur on. The 5 practice core exams contain between 12 and 15 questions, each having around 50 marks. The 8 practice extended exams are similar but longer than the core ones. Answers to these questions are given and the book ends with a list of formulae which need to be known, grade descriptions and an index. The language seems to be straightforward and easy to read and my impression is that a core or extended level student should find this book of considerable value in preparing for IGCSE mathematics. Since the book was only published this year, it is rather early for feedback from users but I would recommend teachers of the syllabus to obtain a copy with a view for use in revision sessions or as a suggested resource for students to use for their own revision.
