Summary: Good for refreshers
Comment: Russian is a fantastic language and I certainly recommend trying to learn it - however, it's very easy to get bogged down in the grammar and technicalities of a language like Russian.
The main strength in this book is that it is easy to digest for somebody who already knows some Russian and is much more lighthearted than the extremely boring 'Colloquial Russian'.

Summary: No use to a learner
Comment: This book is useless if you want to learn any Russian.
If you are starting Russian please do not buy anything which tries to teach in English transcription as this does not simplify the learning process at all. All that happens is that the familiar English letters encourage you to pronounce the words like English and hold you back from acquiring anything like an intelligible pronunciation. In any case Russians never write in English transcription so you are acquiring a useless skill.
The first paragraph of chapter 1 contains the following howler: "Russian and English both come from the same ancestor - Sanskrit". The chapter proceeds to give a number of Russian words borrowed from English (in English transcription) and spends more pages reassuring you how easy learning Russian will be before proceeding to some mangled transcribed words with sketchy and intermittent grammar explanations.
This book is only of use if you already know Russian and are passing the time in a bookshop. I don't like to put anyone off learning this amazing language so as an alternative I recommend "Colloquial Russian" by Svetlana Le Fleming and Susan Kay or "The New Penguin Russian Course" by Nicholas Brown.

Summary: Please Retitle : Russian for Dummies who are fluent in Russian
Comment: Not normally one to rubbish a dummies product but this is dreadful the CD that accompanies the book is too demanding of repaeting large phrases. Also large ammounts of useful basics are missed out from the spoken CD. Things such as numbers, letter pronuciation (a book is not as good as hearing it).
Try harder.
