Summary: Be smart: don't buy this "For Dummies" book

Comment: If you want to become even half proficient in networking, don't but this book. It lacks structure and is full of patronising rubbish, and pathetic attempts at humour, which quickly become bloody irritating. Much better to spend your money on something that does the job like :-
1. Teach Yourself Networking in 24 Hours, by Matt Hayden
2. Networking: A beginner's Guide, by Bruce Hallberg
3. Networking Essentials Plus 3rd edition, by Microsoft Press
4. Networking+ Study Guide, by David Groth

Summary: Full of cut-and-paste rubbish from other Dummies books

Comment: I bought this book because I wanted to learn about networking.

The book has no clear structure .... it's all over the place (is this supposed to be the "fun" part of the Dummies books ?)

The book is crammed full of material that is "peripheral" at best (if i wanted a book on "e-mail" I would have bought one). I get the sense that someone sits down with a word processor, writes a few pages about networking and then does a cut-and-paste job from other Dummies computer books to fill pages.

By "Dummies" do they mean "people who wouldn't understand a clear explaination of something so we better leave it unclear or hanging" ?

All I wanted was a book that would give me a clear understanding of networking basics. For example setting up a home network ... the book tells you little about how to configure TCP/IP settings in Win 9x ... how can you set up a TCP/IP home network without knowing this ????

If your new to networking and want to know the basics, dont buy this book. I'm looking for another.

Summary: Totally demystified networking, and raised my confidence

Comment: I'm a systems developer with long experience but I've always kind of ignored networking. I know we can connect computers/devices somehow but don't really need to know how. But now I want to know for career development purposes so bought this book.

This book gave me the how. I now know that if I want to set up my own network in my home, as some mates have done for their own development/ experimenting/ consultancy purposes, I would have no trouble at all.

Customer Rating: Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5Average rating of 4/5

Summary: It's quite basic, but good to get the essentials.

Comment: If you're looking for a book to start from scratch this is a good choice. Of course it's an introduction to Networks and is very basic, it reads fast, you don't need two networked computers, the book is theoretic. You may find it too basic but that's easily solved, once you've read it, buy another more serious one.

Customer Rating: Average rating of 3/5Average rating of 3/5Average rating of 3/5Average rating of 3/5Average rating of 3/5

Summary: Good for anyone who wants to setup there own network

Comment: An excellent book for anyone who wants to setup there own network and at the same time can be quite informative for those who already use one.

I would'nt recommend this to anyone who considers themselves as an advanced user and the book repeat a little to much.

Computers in business environments become exponentially helpful and critical for daily operations when they are linked together in local area networks (LANs) that enable co-workers to share files, Internet access and valuable resources like printers and plotters. Building a network of IBM-compatible PCs requires careful strategic planning, and Networking for Dummies, Fourth Edition, will help you sort out the technical details as painlessly as possible.

This book helps you figure out whether you need a LAN at all--the author isn't shy about recommending simpler solutions such as printer switches--and then helps you get everything hooked up. Mainly, Lowe describes LANs in an accurate and comprehensive, though somewhat generic, way.

Once it has been determined that you need a network operating system, Lowe describes the characteristics of several good ones (including NetWare 4.2, NetWare 5, Windows NT 4, and LANtastic). He also explains network architectures, cabling systems and security issues. New to this edition is information on transforming your LAN into an intranet by adapting internal protocols to Internet standards. There is lots of solid information on troubleshooting and optimising performance too.

Much of the valuable information in Networking for Dummies comes in the form of scenarios. Lowe uses short situations and explains, specifically, what networking hardware and software will be required or beneficial. Find a story that matches your situation and you'll be in business. --David Wall
