Summary: A must for wanabee and current student nurses
Comment: I particularly enjoyed reading the first chapter about the role of the nurse, I found it informative and sets the scene of nursing today including what is expected of you as a student and once a qualified staff nurse. I enjoyed reading that it didn't just focus on what a nurse does but continued that by going more in-depth into the clinical governance issues associated with nursing such as ethics, professional standards, accountability and further development once qualified. I think it is important that as a student nurse that you are aware of your role as a professional and I think that too often foundation books fail to include this and focus primarily on the here and now. The history of nursing really enabled me to get a feel and fully appreciate where nursing has come since back in the times. A thoroughly enjoyable chapter.
Moving on to the body systems elements. Anatomy and Physiology is a subject that I find difficult, and often the a+p books recommended by universitys are fair to complex and in-depth. I felt these chapters gave a great insight basic knowledge of how each system worked and would enable you to go on to further reading in a more advanced a+p book. These chapters would be great for an individual interested in nursing, waiting to start nursing or a first year. It was great that quizzes were at the end which enabled me to see how much of the information I had absorbed from the text and I was quite surprised that it was quite a lot. I liked how these chapters incorporated the normal system and then when things go wrong within the system it really did make it understandable especially with the links to practice (it made everything fit into place!).
The next chapter, `Nursing in Practice' has to be rated as brilliant. As a 3rd year student it provided me with vital refreshers of the elements included which often in many books can include too much detail when you want just a refresher. This book really does capture all branches which is good, and again unusual for a foundations book. Chapter 3 provides great exposure to all the different branches I particularly liked the Mental health and learning disabilities section as again it included historical perceptions, the types of problems, how these are responded to etc which is of great benefit throughout your nursing career.
It was of great pleasure to see that there was a section on first aid, on reading it was informative, and simple to follow. At uni we don't receive any first aid training and I think sometimes we require this underpinning knowledge, although I am aware this isn't a first aid certificate it would be useful to read for prior to starting a first aid course, or throughout the course for acute care placements.
Chapter 16 again was great, and unusual to see in a foundation book. It included relevant information of the principles of safe administration of medication and the underpinning theory behind these. The drug calculations were very useful and will save students having to buy a separate drug calculations books.
In summary, I feel that this is a must have book for a student nurse, and I would recommend it to people starting there nursing training or to first year students as I feel it will be a good basis for underpinning theory. However, it is a book which included elements which will be useful throughout your training for reference and refreshers. I particularly liked the end of chapter quizzes which enable you to consolidate you learning for that particular chapter and see if you need further knowledge in a particular area. The case studies to real life situations helped the book to be believable and applied to practice. Again the highlighting of key-terms was useful and would enable students to keep a dictionary of useful words used within nursing.

Summary: Common Foundation Studies in Nursing
Comment: This revised 4th edition is much more comprehensive to a new nursing student than the previous version. Focusing on the 4 key domains as stipulated by the NMC this book covers off pretty much everything a nursing student needs - especially a first year! Covering elements of financial support available prior to enrollment, to the academic learning support available this book is very comprehensive. It discusses how to learn effectively and how to utilise your time proactively. Professional standards and rules covers ethical and autonomous considerations for nursing which will no doubt be referenced within initial essays in year 1. With a wide range of supportive tools that can be utilised to ensure placements opportunities are maximised this book covers off many critical facts of nursing and with new features on hygiene, nutrition and health and safety all are well documented, factual and provide first hand experience from the nursing perspective.
A MUST for anyone considering a nursing course and I would recommend this to all first years for reference and support. As a second year student this book is ideal for referencing but geared more towards the novice.

Summary: Ideal for student nurses!
Comment: This book is ideal for a student nurse, it covers a range of topics such as care delivery and communication skills. The book has a number of activities
allowing an interactive approach to using the book, and many of the activities
are focused on whilst on placement. This is a brillaint book for students on placement as it looks at the four domains that practice profiles cover based around the NMC code of conduct and would be very benefical when completing benchmarks. It also breaks down the code of conduct and focuses on issues such as informed consent, and covers areas taught in theory blocks.
The actual book it self is very easy to read, and laid out in a simple format with a good use of diagrams and activities to help learning being accomplished.
As a second year student nurse this is a good book to use whilst completing benchmarks but would reccomend it to any first year student nurse completing assignments and for your first placement.
