Summary: Simple and straightforward

Comment: Having recently developed an interest in photography I have bought quite a few books on the subject. For the amateur/enthusiast this is one of the best. It contains lots of really useful practical tips, covering everything from weddings to landscapes, without boring the reader with unnecessary technical jargon.

The author's sense of humour is an acquired taste. At the start of the book it grated on me slightly but by the end I had warmed to it and his interest and passion are obvious. The book is an easy and enjoyable read and I often find myself referring back to it. I also bought the second volume and would equally recommend it as a companion to the first.

Summary: Bring on Volume 2, I can't wait

Comment: Discovered this by accident in a old fashioned book store and love it. OK so the humour is a bit naff but this guy seriously knows what he is talking about and how to put it on paper so that the only thing on your mind after reading a chapter is reaching for the camera to put it into practice.

Quick tips that can really help improve the pictures that you take with whatever equipment you have to hand without blinding you with science.

Summary: Very helpful - doesn't blind you with science

Comment: This book is really well done - it gives a lot of useful and easy to understand information that will enable you, the proud owner of either a SLR or a point and shoot camera, to improve the photos you take.

It is in different chapters covering all sorts of photography from shooting flowers to taking wedding photos. It suggests useful bits of equipment and gives various options for people who are on tight budgets right up to those who have plenty of spondoolies to throw around.

The ONLY grumble is the humour is a little childish and irritating at times, but if you overlook that, it's a great little book.

I suspect this book will be in my camera bag for some time because there's lots to learn!

Summary: Great as a first DSLR book

Comment: Admittedly, Scott Kelby's personality in this book did remind me of that stereotypical, excessively familiar (but ultimately a good friendly bloke) American who we've all had the pleasure of encountering, and who enjoys nothing more than the sound of his own jokes ("almost fooled ya there, didn't I?!", etc.). And yes, the book may be slightly let down by the author's humour (or should that be humor), but don't let that put you off - he knows his stuff, and it contains very useful tips, in plain English, that will improve your photography. On a personal note, I must have slightly underestimated my own skills when I purchased this book, and found I was largely familiar with much of the content, but nevertheless found most of the advice extremely helpful on a practical level. For example, one of my favourite tips was to always keep the eyes of the subject 'tack sharp' (yes I know...), be it portrait or wildlife photography. Following this simple advice religiously has dramatically improved my photographs, and now looking critically at some of my old photos, it is clear that I wasn't always conscious of this, blindingly obvious as it sounds! The most useful part of the book for me were the last few chapters on how best to shoot for specific conditions, such as silhouettes, night landscapes, etc. There are plenty of excellent photography resources these days, from magazines to online blogs, but it's great to have all these useful tips in one reference book, written largely in a concise and clear style, with each topic illustrated appropriately. I would recommend this to a beginner as their first DSLR photography book.

Summary: A great starting point

Comment: Ignore all the reviews slating the humour in this book. Yes its there, but only really in the first section, and its a nice departure from the coldness found in other photography books.

I have found this book very helpful, each page is a different subject and it gets right to the point. If you want to know how to take great pictures of waterfalls, you just look on that page. And guess what.

Yes the advice given works.

If you want to take better pictures and not get bogged down with all the tech talk get this book.
