Summary: Oh my...
Comment: I'm teaching the Twenty First Century Science course for the first time this year and have been studying this text book in conjunction with the OCR syllabus in preparation.
Firstly the background: this course has attracted a good deal of criticism for being "media led" rather than science led - in other words the issues are discussed before the science when it is far, far better, for the sake of simple understanding in my experience, to put them the other way around.
And now the book: this text book (rightly or wrongly) takes the same approach as the course. Issues are discussed and then the science introduced as the issues are explored. The result I find is that a good deal of the science is left out. For example, the science behind mobile phones is fascinating and complex (but not too complex that a child can't understand it) but the treatment in the book is cursory at best. More worryingly, there is at least one example were the science is quite wrong: the authors sing the praises of catalytic converters as a means of improving air quality but neglect to mention that they produce highly toxic hydrogen sulphide (ever wondered what the bad egg smell from your car is when it has only travelled a short distance?).
There is also a total lack of objectivity when it comes to pharmaceuticals. We learnt at school how medicines and the process of bringing a medicine to market (as a market is truly what it is) can go wrong - namely thalidomide. Not so here. Such a lack of balance really is unforgivable.
Have the authors used a US spell checker? Sulphur is NOT spelt sulfur.
Buy this if you must but question everything this book tells you...and please, please spell suphur with a 'ph'.
