Summary: Perfect Japanese mini dictionary

Comment: I am very happy to own Oxford Japanese mini dictionary. I am a beginner in Japanese and started studying three months ago. I really needed a simple and clear Japanese dictionary with basic beginner's vocabulary. This dictionary has everything I need for my current studying. I thought 8 pounds was a bit expensive but there was no anything more suitable and I don't regret it.

The dictionary itself is small enough to be carried in a pocket, it has a very nice introduction and "how to use this dictionary" section. Authors warn beginners against copying complicated kanji and use hiragana instead. There is no romaji, all words are written in hiragana and katakana (relatively easy and intermediate kanjis are written along). This is very helpful and helps learning some kanji. Extremely difficult kanjis are not written. The dictionary has also a great number of useful phrases and explanations of when and where they are used (many analogical Japanese words and phrases cannot be translated or used in the same way as the English ones - the authors help us here too by writing how Japanese people actually use certain phrases and words.)

I would highly recommend this dictionary for beginners or even those who go for Japanese GCSE. I am not sure however if it's good enough for the advanced students or those who want to use it for translations, reading books or papers.

Summary: (Probably) Just what you need

Comment: The best learner's dictionary I've come across - and it fits in your pocket (great for taking on your travels).
A good general dictionary - not the most comprehensive but it is a "mini" dictionary. Read the "How to use this dictionary" section (seriously), you'll get so much more out of it.
Highly recommended for beginners and intermediate students alike. The lack of romaji is a blessing.
The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is its slightly limited vocabulary.

Summary: The best little Japanese dictionary I've found

Comment: The best thing about this book, NO ROMAJI!
I know I'm not the only one who finds romaji annoying and hard to read. Unfortunately the folks who write dictionaries seem to think that we are unable to learn a new writing system, and insist on transliterating everything. So "Thank You" to Jonathan and Gillian for breaking the mould and making a Japanese dictionary that is useful to real learners of Japanese. This book is now carried with me everywhere.
It's not perfect. It doesn't have as many words as some dictionaries (a design choice - more detail in fewer words). The English is very British, Americans could become frustrated with this. And I wish it included a Kanji to Kana dictionary in the back.
However, with its wealth of examples, clear definitions, and helpful notes, it is the best small dictionary of Japanese I have found.
