Summary: All you need for your exam - almost!
Comment: This book provides an informal coverage of the requirements for the CompTIA Network+ exam. It provides an enjoyable read, which is essential if you wish to cover the syllabus from scratch.
The information is written in an informative and logical manner with enough wit to keep the reader interested, without going over the top. It contains a number of errors, but these are minor and should be easily spotted by the reader. Some of the diagrams are not as clear as I would like and on many occasions are not self-explanatory. However, the book provides the essential stepping-stone for the beginner to delve into the topology, TCP/IP, OSI seven-layer model or subnetting.
The CD contains practise exams. Practise exams are essential for anyone about to take the exam. However, I found them to be useful only on the first showing as there are a limited number of questions and a student will soon be able to learn the question by route. Consequently they quickly become pointless, as the mark will be about the student's memory and not their knowledge. Additionally, you have to load the software/database onto you computer, instead of running from the CD - adding more junk to your hard drive.
The book was never intended to be a dry reference manual (as explained by the authors) and as such, only provides the minimum information needed for the exam. It is not likely be used much after qualification.
Overall, I would recommend it to someone new to networking/network+ as a means of getting their metaphorical 'toe' in the door.
