Summary: does anyone know what beginner means?
Comment: The people who wrote this book obviously don't know what its like to be a complete beginner going to a foreign country! Where is the weather vocab? numbers? food? instead the audio cd jumps straight into full on conversation. Unit 2 is at the art gallery! thats the last place i would go if i was new to russian and i certainly wouldn't be able to hold a conversation. I was hoping to get a step by step guide to basic russian language that would help me out when i get there. the book is better than the CD though. there is definately a market out there for a really good beginners guide. if anyone knows of one please let me know

Summary: Good but challenging
Comment: The CD is useful, with the characters speaking slowly and clearly. Builds a vocabulary steadily. The vocabulary in the back is short, so a dictionary is recommended. Excellent value for money.

Comment: I'm an absolute beginner, pretty much, particularly with the Russian language. And after reading the first 3 chapters (yes, I didn't get far) I still had enough to introduce myself and impress the people I was visiting in country Russia. (Though I'm still a long way from actually conducting a conversation or asking anything really useful).
The CDs are a necessity with this book as the dialogues are written entirely in Russian script. Whilst one can supposedly infer the pronunciation of Russian from the script I would say that Russian is not too dissimilar from English in that some words are pronounced a little differently from how it is strictly written.. (it's hard to guess which syllables are almost skipped over completely, and which are vital). So CDs help with reading the Russian script to understand how it should sound.
It did help that I bought the associated Russian Script book in the Teach Yourself series. If anything I was able to easily identify post offices once I got to Russia!!
The CDs have an American sounding introduction, but the exercises themselves sound like a well-versed English woman is making the explanations.

Summary: An excellent self-teach course
Comment: I have been using this course now for about 6 months. It is very good, enjoyable and comprehensive as it covers a variety of different settings to cover the more common vocabulary and essential grammar. I particularly like the discs accompanying the course as they do give the student every chance to hear and practice spoken Russian. There are lots of exercises to test your progress and your deveolping translation skills, but unfortunately the book/discs do not contain a complete set of answers/translations - hence my 4 stars and not 5!

Comment: The best Russian language guide around. The CD is so useful for pronounciation and the book easy to follow and understand. I would recommend however, getting the book on Beginner's Russian Script, as it helps speed up the learning process dramatically.
