Comment: It's a good book which displays how to pronounce the words phonetically. The phrases seem to be quite formal, such as 'how do i get to the airport' and what not. I'm a british born chinese and brought it to brush up on my cantonese but I didn't think it was that helpful. One of the main reasons why is that the CD doesn't really correspond to any specific exercise in the book. If the two truly went hand in hand at a step by step basis then that would have helped a lot. Also I found that I was quite clueless to the pronounciation of certain phrases in the book, the CD didn't cover them. Overall a good package but would need a lot of experience in the language beforehand

Summary: Great book.
Comment: I took an interest in the language whilst meeting new friends at university. In the beginning i struggled somewhat mastering some of the basics, and these did take time, however after you learn these, the rest of the book becomes much much easier to proceed with. So dont be discouraged by the early struggles. If you have native speaking friends this can prove very helpful, but many people comment on how well i can speak it even after just a few months. I highly recommend this book, and its well worth the investment of time in the early stages to really get a good grounding. Its a harder language than Mandarin to learn, so give it some time and you should be pleased with what this book can teach you.
I also agree that the cds are more to help with pronounciation more than learning new words. But still useful.

Summary: Cantonese learners
Comment: I have married into a Hong Kong/Cantonese family and have been lucky enough to get alot of assistance with my learning this rather simple language. The cds are useful to master the pronounciation but does not actually teach you very much, using the book alone means you are not actually able to speak the language! Not very helpful for an absolute beginner but great for someone like me with a basic grounding and lots of assistance. If you do travel to Hong Kong though, everyone speaks English and are extremely helpful and will help you learn the language!! If you are an absolute beginner I would recommend trying a different title.

Comment: This book is the best book I've seen for learning beginner Cantonese! It uses a remarkably simple, yet effective method for teaching the tonal aspect of the language. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to quickly learn the basics.

Summary: A brilliant book - if you have a Cantonese speaking friend
Comment: If you don't have a friend who can speak Cantonese, then don't buy this book - but do buy the Book + Audio Cassette version instead.
Used on its own, i.e. without the cassette, it provides a good lesson structure which you can follow with the help of a Cantonese speaking friend. I think that knowing a native speaker is pretty much a requirement to learn such a precise language anyway, as a small change in pronounciation makes a whole load of difference to the meaning.
The book uses funny dialogs and cartoons to help you learn, and also has exercises in each chapter to make certain you have understood everything that was taught. For example, making a meaningful sentance out of a 'jubbled up' one. To further check your progress there are revision chapters throughout the book, which are there to consolidate all of what you have been taught so far.
In summary, this book will not do a brilliant job of teaching you to speak Cantonese IF you intend to use it on its own. BUT like I've said, if you have a Cantonese speaking friend to teach you pronounciation then it provides a very good lesson plan for you to work from.
Highly Recommended.
