Summary: Solid Buy
Comment: I've had this machine for over a month now and I'm quite happy with it. It DOES have crapware; but if I sold this good a computer, I would use it to promote my other products as well! It doesn't really get in the way, so I'm ok. The computer's power is good and the design is stylish. The Blu-ray feature is a huge plus. I especially like the memorystick and the SD card slots.
I highly recommend it.

Summary: Sony VGN-FW270J
Comment: Just wanted to add a couple of things to the previous reviews:
1) I purchased my VAIO just before XMAS with the intent of doing a lot of video editing. So far it has been great (no blue screen!!!). I use Ulead VideoStudio 11+ with a Sony DCVRTR8 and everything works as I expect. This may be because I blew away the factory image on the HDD and reinstalled using the recovery utility.
2) Not the VAIO's fault BUT.....I use MS OneNote 2007 and was greatly disappointed to learn that the "Send to OneNote" feature will not work until the next version of OneNote is released. This is due to the older driver (used by this feature) not working with Vista x64. Strange given that you would expect MS products to work well with one another (that was a joke :-) for the humor impaired).
All in all I have found the laptop to be pretty solid (knock on wood).

Summary: Famous Sony customer service!
Comment: Thanks for the review! On the failing firewire.
Oh man and I was really looking into this laptop but if you have a failing firewire that is what I needed for(audio production) and this way of sony of dealing with customers by blowing them off doesn't!! Work because I had a sony vaio before and they did the same thing with my me! Shame on them oh well may be I have to look some where else!

Summary: Great Computer - But...
Comment: I think everything about this computer is a five, but I am specifically reviewing it for one major flaw - don't try capturing video from your camcorder through the firewire (also known as the ilink) connection. It crashes the computer everytime. This was one of the main reasons I purchased this computer - was to capture video in order to do some editing. I have tried two different camcorders, two different firewire cables, two different programs to capture, but they all crashed. I found a forum discussing this issue and pointed this all out to Sony chat support - but they are blowing this off and don't know how to fix it. Great computer - but this flaw is a deal buster for me.

Summary: My new love
Comment: I used to own a Vaio FJ-270 and loved it except for its severe overheating problem. This one was cheaper and better--I love how computers keep getting cheaper. Despite being filled with free software (which keep in mind keeps the price of the computer down), I could not find any flaws, except for the computer keys being spaced out which took a few days to get used to.
Pros:
Massive HDD (I was a bit angry when I found out it really only had 280 GB)
-Fast processor
-Beautiful HD screen!
-Elegantly designed
-quiet
-The legs on the back of unit raise it up a lot more than my previous laptop, so the fan is able to cool unit down faster and easier (the fan is also extremely quiet!)
Cons:
-HDD does Not have a full 320; it was not even 290 GB! (I know I put the hard drive on the pro also--it still is a huge amount of memory)
-Spaced out keys take some getting used to
-Trial ware galore
-USB ports are only located on one side. This is a downgrade from my old Vaio
-Windows Vista--the biggest disappointment of all! It SUCKS!
Keep in mind this unit has a 5200 RPM HDD which wont allow you to enjoy the 4 GB of ram as well as a 7200 RPM HDD would. 5200 RPM does preserve battery life about 6-10% more.
********HELPFUL TIP*********** I purchased this thing and two days later it went down $100! I was so angry because Amazon discontinued their price guarantee. I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask for a reimbursement of the difference so I called. At first, India said there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING they could do. I then asked to speak to their supervisor and the woman reminded me it would do no good. After 5 minutes of my time, they gave me a "one time" adjustment. Don't fear buying from Amazon if you think it may go down because they are more than capable of reimbursing you your money!! Just keep calling back if it doesn't work the first time!
