Summary: great little machine
Comment: bought this netbook about a month ago and have been constantly using it since. changed the xandros linux OS to ubuntu. this has made the machine MUCH easier to use. nothing at all to complain about now. it's great!
Customer Rating:
Summary: Great hardware-not so great software
Comment: The asus eee 1000h is small, ultraportable, the screen is wonderful, the keyboard is easy.... I'm writing this review on it, I love it. BUT the linux version that is pre-installed is an unknown version. You can't touch it, you can't configure it, you can't fix it. The file manager crashes every 3 seconds and it disconnects from the internet every now and then for no reason. I think that the best thing to do is to buy the asus, but try to install XP or any other OS that you can control.

Summary: Small Wonder Big Value
Comment: I've waited years to see this and now finally it is here, an ultra compact touch-type able wifi surfer and no M$ too! I'm new to Linux so I'm still on the default Xandros, but activating IceWm enabled me to find a better theme for the application windows -- OK for now. With a screen this small I only see the kioskish desktop when I want something. Aestheticlly, this ebony black beauty is perfection.
The keyboard is close enough to full size that I can touch type just fine, maybe even better (short fingers). Not being a big point/click type the touchpad is very convenient, only caveat being the over sensitive pad nuisance. Just disable tapping and use the buttons instead and that problem is gone. The shift key location is a tradeoff I'm happy to make since I use the arrow keys a lot and prefer this setup.
I'm packing it in a nice slim case logic bag designed for the netbook and it fits like a glove. At the cafe it's perfect on the small tabletop. Just slide it out and fire it up. No lugging, no outlet. Nothing. The mobile device too small; laptop is too big. This is the future and it has arrived.
If you have to have XP or just don't adapt then get that instead. I'd rather have the solid drive and open source possibilities. For an on-the-go computer this holds hundreds of albums, and it is perfect for surfing and writing. Some minor quibbles aren't quite enough IMHO to cost it a single star, and I just don't see how they could have designed it better. Just the right size and weight too.
A couple years ago I thought I had finally found the ideal when looking at a subnotebook but no way I could shell out 2-3 grand. This is the deal. I'll be happy with this for years and will look forward to even more powerful small machines to come.

Summary: A web book that finally got things perfect!
Comment: Where do I even start? This mini laptop has everything the ordinary person could ever want in a machine. Connection to wireless internet is flawless and the linux system it comes with is a breeze for anybody to use. The keyboard is perfect for most uses and the screen is perfectly sized. When you carry this laptop it's hard to even tell you have anything at all due to the weight being so light. I highly recommend this to anybody who is looking for a perfectly user friendly system without strings attached. Also this system got me introduced to the Linux program, which after using I'll never buy a Windows operated system again. Asus, you work magic!

Summary: it is what it is
Comment: Not a bad little portable to tote along. As long as you understand that is what you are buying, you will probably be reasonably happy. In retrospect I would have preferred something with less Linuxiness. My desktop and portables are about what I do with them external to the device itself. But for Linux, the medium and message are too often the same thing. Any sort of Linux problem will lead you into a fairyland in which the solutions, many possible and varied, are apt to lead you farther and farther from home.
The keyboard isn't impossible, but it's got a little stinker. If you touch type that shift key on the right side is going to take some serious re-learning. And every time you miss it, you get to clean up your mistakes before you continue with what you are doing. The size works well even with my clubby hands.
I'd buy it again for half the price. Maybe.
