Comment: I entered Spanish 220 after 5 years Spanish equivalent through middle school and high school. To be honest, I probably would have been more comfortable taking the next level up considering how easy the material looked, it seemed like the content that we covered in Spanish 3 or 4. I will probably use this course as a refresher course since I didn't take Spanish my senior year, and to lighten my load for my first semester. It would have been nice to see what the inside of the book looked liked before choosing the course. It definitely beats buying school books here in amazon marketplace because it is way cheaper! The books at my school bookstore were shrink wrapped in plastic so I couldn't browse through it. There is also an online code that gains you access to go online and see all sorts of additions and tools... the thing is, it only allows for one use, so for me... I bought the book used, and if that is a concern for you to access these tools, buy the book brand new if you think it will help you. I've used online helper tools for my AP classes/IB courses, and it seems like they were only useful for science and math classes. I had hesitation for buying my school books online here, and it was my first time, and so far so GREAT!!! I have gotten 6 books so far, all were the "like new" and "very good" condition as I had requested, and they came unbelievably fast which was unexpected. If you're going for cost reduction, when you buy an "acceptable" book, do not expect it to look nice... for me, I wanted my books to look nice, and to my surprise when I got this book, the "like new" book was actually the cheapest at the time :) Hope this is useful to someone out there!

Comment: I am an instructor at college and I have been teaching with this book for 3 semesters now and I think it is an excellent book. It is a lot of fun and it covers a lot of interesting topics. It is a bit different from other Spanish textbooks publish in the US, with more pictures and more engaging and fun exercises. My students and I love the short movies that are integrated in this program and the online component (free with a new book). They are both very useful to become familiar with real Spanish and not the distorted version you get sometimes for languages students.
I strongly recommend this book for intermediate levels.

Comment: Ugh, where do I begin with this one? The layout is frantic and confusing, with loads of dsitracting bright colors. About 1/3 of the book is little side-stories that are too shallow to be worth reading. Important grammar rules are hidden in various places on the page, so it's easy to miss parts, and there is a seperate grammar guide to each lesson in the back of the book, so you have to constantly flip back and forth between the two. Chapters markings are hidden in the inside margins, making it difficult to jump to whatever chapter you're studying. Questions on the material require answers that are either practically YES/NO, or require abilities well beyond the level of the book.
The accompanying audio files are on the same site as the workbook/lab manual, but the videos are on a completely different one requiring a seperate registration and password.
The online homework is either graded by the computer, the instructor, or both. You don't find out until you've already submitted the answers to a given assignment. The computer apparently only accepts one combination of characters, so any omitted accent marks/misspellings result in an "incorrect" mark. It doesn't tell you what the correct answer is, but it will let you make repeated attempts, which the site says aren't factored into the cumulative score. Whether this refers to an attempt, or the entire assignment is anyone's guess. The instructions are vague, which obvously doesn't work well with the specific desired answers. The whole online part is an exercise in frustration.
To sum up- This book/system is expensive, flashy, and extremely frustrating. I have never come across a text that fails on so many levels.
