Summary: A gift for my nephew
Comment: that seems to have everything. Just a little book that has lots of useful and not so useful trivia in it. I saw it in another store and came to Amazon to buy it because I always get such great deals. It was worth the 8.95 I paid and he seemed to like it.
Customer Rating:
Summary: Entertaining read!
Comment: Tom Parker is the guru of the rule of thumb, having written a couple of other very entertaining books on the same topic (but containing entirely different rules) both of which I have in my possession. This one is just as good, good for people with short attention spans, or just people interested in trivia. I can pick this up and read a few every day, so as to prolong the enjoyment. And every once in a while I stumble upon a rule I can actually use!

Summary: Rules of Thumb is witty and smart
Comment: My son has to write a report to read aloud to his class. He looked up speeches in the index to Rules of Thumb and discovered he needs to write 150 words for every minute of delivery. He also found out he should be working for and hour and a half for each minute of the speech. He is way behind--especially since he got completely distracted reading other rules.
I'm addicted to rules of thumb. I can't read just one. Every page has a rule that makes me laugh, another I can use right away, and at least a couple I hope I will remember. Each rule is a practical tip from a real person. And each one gives a tiny glimpse into someone's life--what he does, what she knows.
Rules of Thumb is a great book to give to yourself or anyone you know.

Summary: Fun, interesting... and useful
Comment: A fantastic collection of truisms and wisdom! This book is fun and light hearted, but it's more than just entertaining. I'm finding interesting, useful tidbits:
* Avoid restaurants with names containing the route number where they're located
* The higher the stakes the easier it is to bluff
* The heavier the traffic the less you gain by changing lanes
* Each degree you lower your thermostat will lower your heating bill by 3%
I pick the book up and glance through it a few minutes at a time. I am
always left deep in thought and feeling a bit wiser than before.

Summary: This is a REAL review--Read Me!
Comment: I don't know what it is with some of the so-called reviews of this book. They were written long before the book was even published. Amazon needs to get its act together and clean up the review process. For all of you potential readers out there, here is a REAL review of this book: Rules of Thumb is more than a book. It is a toolbox of shortcuts. There are a number of things I like about the book, starting with how it feels. It is small and fits in the palm of your hand. Set it on your kitchen counter, and it makes a great conversation starter when guests come over because no one can resist picking it up. It is fun because it is full of pictures. Use the index to find the rule you need. Best of all, Rules of Thumb compiles the advice of people who have learned from experience--so you don't have to. In this time of penny pinching, it will make a great stocking stuffer. I'm getting one for each member of my family.

A mix of folk wisdom, common sense, shared experience, the advice of experts, and the kind of group think that's made websites like Wikipedia so vital, Rules of Thumb is the impulsive compendium of 1,000 general principles that apply to every facet of life. Collected by Tom Parker for over 25 years, these are rules that are practical, quirky, and as entertaining to read as they are relevant to the reader. There's a rule of thumb for just about every subject imaginable— money, marriage, cooking, health, weather, cars, gardening, restaurants, travel. This is the priceless knowledge that's accumulated not from reading, but from living. Tempted by a string of pearls at a yard sale? Rub them against your teeth: The rule of thumb, as your grandmother might have told you, is that a genuine pearl will grate. Not sure how to choose a puppy? Pick one whose tail wags in sync with its walk—a sign of calmness. To win at blackjack, assume that any unseen card is an eight. And remember, a rule of thumb works four out of five times (including this one).
