Summary: Great Book

Comment: Most of the complaints come from the author allegedly using left wing examples. This is not necessarily true. If you are giving an important speech in front of a large audience you must be politically correct. You don't won't to end up like Trent Lott do you? An example is given like this: You're giving a speech on Veterans Day about the sacrifices of service members. You start off by saying you would like to thank all the spouses for supporting the veterans during war time. That would be inclusive language. Today it would be better to thank all the spouses AND partners for coming out to the ceremony(covering the gay community and bf's/gf's). I do agree that the book could have been condensed from 18 chapters to about 10. The language is simplistic because it is usually taken within the first semester or two of college.

Summary: Grossly overpriced, soon outdated, but thorough

Comment: I resent having to buy yet another super-expensive college textbook with basic information, expanded to four times what it needs to be, and packaged with useless CD's ($100 plus). While the written material is thorough, it could be condensed to 100-150 pages. Does public speaking really change so much that an "updated" edition is warranted within two years?

To me, it's another distasteful example of college textbook publishers gouging students, and the colleges going along with it. Thanks.

Summary: Review on my purchase of a public speaking text book.

Comment: The product itself arrived in great condition as promised. However, I am extremely dissapointed with the way it was shipped to me. I chose to pay extra money to get the book to me the next day, a Friday, because I needed it for class. Unfortunatly, Amazon.com couldn't be bothered to get the package to me until Monday, which made my life very difficult. I wouldn't have even gotten the book on time for class on Monday if I hadn't called UPS and told them I was supposed to have gotten the book several days ago. I will not trust Amazon.com to get books to me with next day shipping ever again. If I need a book in a short amount of time I will be taking my business elsewhere.

Summary: Purchase

Comment: I was very satisfied with this purchase. The shipping was so quick!! I didn't even expect it to be that fast. The item itself was good.

Summary: I still don't have my book

Comment: I ordered this book on the 3rd of September, and it was shipped on the 5th, and I was told that it would take 3-15 days before the book came. Well, it's October 5th now, and I STILL do not have my book. I am not happy and I want my money back.

Never before has the public speaking market witnessed a phenomenon like that of THE ART OF PUBLIC SPEAKING. Recognised as the book that will work no matter what, the text continues to offer the strengths that have made it such a success through four editions: clarity, excellent, well-chosen examples, and speech excerpts that further clarify the important concepts, annotated sample speeches and outlines, and a solid grounding in classical theory and contemporary research. No other book comes close to its no-nonsense, down-to-earth approach and step-by-step instruction in the preparation and presentation of speeches. While the fifth edition retains its traditional strengths, it also offers comprehensive revision. The revision features new full-chapter coverage of ethics and a second chapter on the important topic of persuasion. It also provides new or expanded coverage of current issues such as multiculturalism, changing demographics and their influence on audience analysis, nonsexist language, emotional appeals, and the role of argumentation in persuasive speaking.
