Summary: Excellent Beginning Italian Text
Comment: I like this text for many reasons. Instead of starting out with a lot of grammar in a big chunk, which tends to discourage beginners, it starts in an interesting way as though you were actually meeting Italians in Italy and getting to know them. Grammar, such as the conjugations of important verbs, is introduced gradually along the way. The text emphasizes pronunciation, which is important for any language, and it is filled with colorful illustrations, which aids comprehension. My group found the cultural supplements in the text (such as the use of gestures), intriguing, since many of us are going to Italy this spring. Finally, the online learning center, which this book gives free access to, provides many stimulating exercises for review, audio reinforcement, and evaluation. Beginning students of Italian should enjoy this thorough and varied text.
