Summary: One of the best Grammer books I've read

Comment: I just wanted to let you know how wonderful your Spanish grammar book helped me `finally' understand the basics of how Spanish is spoken. In short, your inexpensive book did more to enlighten me than all the other titles I struggled with. Your simplistic approach helped give me the core connection between English and Spanish basic structure...especially the "he/she/it" and they "we/they/they". Finally, I can move on with a better pace.
I thought it was worth telling you that....

Summary: Use This Book In Conjunction With Other Books

Comment: This book is a great addition to my library of Spanish books. I do like the way the graphics are visual aids for learning. It not only helps with Spanish, but also gives a refresher on English grammar.

However, you must have a basic understanding of Spanish before you read this book. The author begins with a chapter on nouns and uses conjugated verbs in that chapter. Even the chapter on verbs would be over the head of someone who doesn't have a foundation in Spanish.

My suggestion is to use it in conjunction with other Spanish books because it is a valuable supplement. If you are teaching yourself Spanish, good books to begin with are:

1. 501 Spanish Verbs: with CD-ROM (Barron's Foreign Language Guides)[ASIN:0764179845] (This book is essential.),

2.) Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses [ASIN:0844273341],

3.) SPANISH in 10 minutes a day® with CD-ROM (10 Minutes a Day)[ASIN:1931873119](I began with this book.),

4.) Spanish Complete Course: Basic-Intermediate, Compact Disc Edition (LL(R) Complete Basic Courses) [ASIN:140002031X] (Great for pronouncation and hearing the language.)

And my favorite book to carry with me everywhere:

5.) First Thousand Words in Spanish: With Internet-Linked Pronunciation Guide (First Thousand Words][[ASIN:0794502849].

Oh, don't forget a good Spanish/English dictionary.

My only problems with the book is that an answer to one of the exercises was incorrect, it didn't teach the 2nd Person Plural form (some of us may want to visit or live in Spain), and there is no index to reference subjects (use lots of sticky notes). Still, I give the book five stars.

Have fun learning.

Summary: One of the best grammar books!

Comment: I have struggled with Spanish grammar and wasted a lot of money to find help in various books on the subject. This book is the only one that has helped me. The author explains the subject well, providing graphic examples of the concept. I only wish this book had been available years ago when I first started school.

Summary: THE book I wish I had when I started

Comment:

According to the back cover, the author Gabrielle Stobbe "is an innovative educator with more than twenty-five years' experience teaching and tutoring foreign languages to students of all ages."

All I can say is, it shows in spades, and colourful ones at that.

I am a self leaner of Spanish and I must say that this book is a fantastic piece of work. Just Enough Spanish Grammar relies a lot on visual cues to get its messages across, and it's exactly the book I wish I had when I started learning Spanish.

Ms Stobbe has a very good grasp of structure, specifically in terms of learning a language. Her ordering of chapters follow a sensible plan designed to create easily assimilable blocks, namely:

The key is the way she explains how a speech if formed, the components of its structure, and then how you can use each component in the language.

Nouns > Adjectives > Pronouns > Verbs > Adverbs > Prepositions > Conjunctions> Interjections

This framework is introduced early, and is then repeated periodically so that at all times, you know exactly where you are in the scheme of things. Ms Stobbe begins with a very simple explanation of how the book works, but really it's something you can pick up instinctively.

With some other books I've used, I found myself lost from time to time and needing to check the outline or go back a few chapters to remind myself of the context I was in at any point. Never with this book. Ms Stobbe understands the importance of a student knowing where he's been, where he's at, and where he'll be going at all times, so that he doesn't get lost and frustrated.

Each chapter begins with a quick review of what you've just learnt. It ends with a quick foreword of where you're headed next. The content is exactly what the book promises: "Just Enough" information to get you understanding and using the language in digestible chunks. This book simply makes it easy to learn steadily with confidence of what's next, while simultaneously aiding retention of what was. A difficult juggling act, but accomplished masterfully indeed!

The pictograms, icons, diagrams and drawings really improve the speed of learning. In most books, I find myself having to flip back to remind myself what certain language concepts are. No longer. Ideas like masculinity, femininity, definite and indefinite articles, direct objects and so on... these are no longer a pain to memorise. Their representation, either by pictures or colour coding, lets you know exactly what something is when you see it.

For example, when it comes to conjugations, you pretty much have to remember the organisation used and which form refers to which pronouns (yo, tu, el, ella, ellos, ustedes) Not with this book. I used to come up with a tedious process of organising them with pictures or writing them in different colours... This is exactly what the author has done in this book. The colour coding and pictograms immediately tells you which conjugation the verb has undergone. Very valuable when you're a beginner!

Grammar, syntax and organisation are things you don't often think about when you're used to speaking a language. With this book I revised the basic elements that made up a sentence, the building blocks that make up communication, and in the process had not only an enjoyable learning trip but also an appreciation of how a language works.

For self learners like myself, it can be a jungle out there trying to figure out which book to get, simply because there are so many out there, and a lot of them are good. I have no hesitation in recommending this book as one that stands out as a unique contribution. It will be especially useful to get a beginner, especially a self-learner, off to a good start. I was frankly very surprised to find it at this price. I look forward to a sequel focussing on higher level grammar.
