Summary: Can't go wrong with this book!
Comment: This is an excellent book for anyone wishing to learn Italian or those of us who already have a foundation in the language. The book starts off with the basics of Italian and slowly builds on complexity and difficulty. The author breaks the grammar down into small, manageable sections - each section filled with reading comprehension (you read a short story that is accompanied with vocabulary and exercises to test your understanding of the stories) as well as exercises to test your understanding of the grammar. The author also peppers the chapters with useful "asides" which are noted in the chapters by "thumbtacks" which help to remind students of particular grammar points or to follow up with further clarification.
Some of the best chapters are on: present subjunctive; use of the verb, piacere; indirect and direct objects; telling time; numbers, dates, calendar; reflexive verbs; prepositions; and negatives.
I find this book to be very versatile and use it as a desk reference when I have a question about a particular grammar point. I have gone through the book myself, refreshing and brushing up on all the grammar topics and have found that I have even learned some new things. Even students who are more advanced can find a use for a book such as this.
Beginners will find this book to be extremely useful. Students with some knowledge of Italian can also benefit from this book to help fill in the gaps and eliminate any grammatical weaknesses. This book is a great buy -- another great work by this author!
(NB: I agree with the other reviewer that you should supplement this book with some kind of aural practice, such as Pimsleur CD's, one of my favorites, Oxford Take Off In Italian (Oxford Take Off in Language Learning Kits) from Oxford University Press)

Summary: One stop shopping resource... tremendous value!
Comment: This is an excellent, inexpensive and relatively comprehensive introduction to Italian. I own this book and the corresponding Spanish title as well. Both are well organized and I waited a long time for the Italian version to come out, but it delivers on everything I was so impressed with in the Spanish version.
Basically, this book is "one stop" shopping for the Italian student. It introduces vocabulary in priority order along with grammar in digestible chunks. It then integrates the material with excellent well thought out exercises and reading passages. If you look at the cost, this book blows the doors off virtually everything at a similar price point.
What you will need in addition to this is something to help with pronunciation such as Pronounce it perfectly in Italian along with the CDs of course and/or Conversational Italian: Learn to Speak and Understand Italian with Pimsleur Language Programs (Simon & Schuster's Pimsleur). Pimsleur is the perfect compliment to this fine book and they offer several products at difference prices depending upon your budget and level of seriousness. The one I highlighted above is the least expensive, but not necessarily the BEST. Also note that the next level up includes the exact same 10 disks that make up the conversational version... therefore.... if you want to save money make the decision which one you really want or need now because if you buy the larger set later you are duplicating about half of it.
Finally, I want to also suggest a reader... Easy Italian Reader (Book & CD-ROM). These are great and the new revision also has a CD. You can't go wrong with any of the products mentioned in this review and they will really jump start your Italian!
